Spotlight: Our Signature Whole30 Maryland Crab Soup
While I spent my formative years on the south shore of Massachusetts, Maryland has been my home for the better part of the last 22 years. It’s here that I developed a deep appreciation for the culinary treasures of the Chesapeake Bay, particularly the iconic Maryland Blue Crabs. While the traditional crab picking experience can be a fun (albeit labor-intensive) annual tradition, I often prefer the convenience and rich flavor of a perfectly seasoned lump crab cake or a comforting bowl of Maryland Crab Soup.
The classic Maryland Crab Soup is a staple in the region, known for its hearty tomato base, loaded with vegetables. However, many traditional recipes often include ingredients like peas, corn (which are legumes/grains and non-compliant for Whole30), Worcestershire sauce (which commonly contains gluten and sugar), and conventional beef broth that might have hidden additives. My mission for this January Whole30 was to create a version that maintains all the robust, authentic flavors of this beloved soup, without compromising on Whole30 compliance. And I must say, the result is absolutely bursting with flavor and incredibly satisfying! Whether you’re a Maryland native or experiencing this delightful soup for the first time, this clean, Whole30-friendly rendition is a must-try.
Choosing the Right Broth for Your Whole30 Maryland Crab Soup
A crucial element in any soup, especially a Whole30 recipe, is the broth. For this Maryland Crab Soup, I personally used Bonafide Provisions beef bone broth. Their commitment to quality and compliant ingredients makes them a fantastic choice. However, the key is to use *any* compliant beef broth brand that aligns with Whole30 standards. This means diligently checking labels for sneaky additives like sugar, artificial colorings, and other non-compliant ingredients. Finding compliant beef broth can sometimes be a bit more challenging than chicken broth, but many excellent options are available.
You can often find high-quality, compliant bone broths in the freezer section of health-focused grocery stores like MOM’s Organic Market and Whole Foods, as well as larger retailers such as Walmart and Wegmans. Always refer to the brand’s website store locator for places near you. Beyond Bonafide Provisions, other reputable Whole30 compliant beef broth brands include Bare Bones Broth, Osso Good Bone Broth, and Kettle & Fire Bone Broth. Investing in a good quality bone broth not only enhances the flavor of your soup but also provides beneficial nutrients to support your Whole30 journey.

Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh lump crab meat
- 4 cups compliant beef broth, ensure no added sugar, colorings, or additives. Bonafide Provisions is recommended.
- ½ onion, diced
- 2 russet potatoes, peeled and diced into ½ inch cubes
- 1 cup frozen cut green beans
- 1 cup diced carrots
- 1 15 oz can diced tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1.5 tbsp Primal Palate New Bae seasoning, add more if you prefer extra heat! (Compliant Old Bay can also be used)
- 1 tsp ground mustard, (powder, found in the seasoning aisle!)
- 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper
Instructions
-
Add all ingredients (except crab meat) into a large stock pot. Stir well to combine all ingredients. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer. Carefully add the lump crab meat, cover the pot, and let it simmer gently on medium-low heat for 1 to 1.5 hours, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully. Serve hot and enjoy this comforting, wholesome soup!
Instant Pot Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients, except for the crab meat, into your Instant Pot. Securely lock the lid in place and set the Instant Pot to cook on manual high pressure for 12 minutes. Once cooking is complete, perform a manual release of the pressure. Carefully remove the lid and switch the Instant Pot to “sauté” mode. Add the lump crab meat and continue to cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the crab is thoroughly warmed through. Serve immediately and savor the rich flavors!
