Why You’ll Adore This Creamy One-Pan Boursin Orzo Bake

This baked orzo with chicken sausage isn’t just another dinner recipe; it’s a revelation for anyone seeking comfort food without the kitchen chaos. Here’s why this dish will quickly become a cherished favorite in your culinary repertoire:

  • Effortless One-Pan Wonder: The star appeal of this dish lies in its sheer simplicity. Everything – from the raw orzo to the flavorful chicken sausage and vibrant vegetables – cooks together in a single baking dish. This means no pre-boiling pasta, no sautéing multiple components, and ultimately, significantly less cleanup. It’s perfect for those evenings when time is short but you still want a wholesome, homemade meal.
  • Unforgettable Creamy Texture: The magic of Boursin Garlic & Herb cheese is truly transformative here. As it bakes, it slowly melts and emulsifies with the chicken broth, creating an irresistibly smooth, tangy, and garlicky sauce that perfectly coats every grain of orzo. The pasta absorbs these delicious liquids as it cooks, resulting in a tender, luxurious mouthfeel that’s deeply satisfying.
  • Flavorful & Hearty: This bake is a symphony of flavors and textures. Savory chicken sausage provides a robust protein base, while cherry tomatoes burst with sweet juiciness, adding a touch of bright acidity. Fresh spinach wilts down, infusing the dish with vital nutrients and a lovely green hue. The blend of Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and salt ties all these elements together into a cohesive, comforting experience.
  • Naturally Gluten-Free & Adaptable: By utilizing gluten-free orzo, this recipe caters to dietary needs without compromising on taste or texture. It’s naturally comforting and can easily be adapted. Whether you’re looking to add more vegetables, swap the protein, or even make it vegetarian, this recipe offers a flexible foundation for customization, making it a truly family-friendly option.
  • Restaurant-Worthy Taste at Home: Despite its minimal effort, this orzo bake boasts a depth of flavor and a sophisticated profile that rivals dishes from your favorite Italian restaurant. The rich, cheesy sauce and perfectly cooked ingredients make it feel like a special occasion meal, even on a regular Tuesday night.

Key Ingredients for Your One-Pan Boursin Orzo Bake

Crafting this creamy tomato orzo bake requires a few simple yet powerful ingredients that come together to create a symphony of flavors. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

Ingredients for one pan orzo bake including Boursin cheese, gluten-free orzo, chicken sausage, spinach, and cherry tomatoes laid out on a kitchen counter.
  • Boursin Garlic & Herb Cheese: This is the secret ingredient that truly elevates the dish. This soft, spreadable cheese melts beautifully into the broth, creating an incredibly creamy, tangy, and wonderfully aromatic sauce. Its unique blend of garlic, fine herbs, and a hint of salt is what gives this bake its signature gourmet touch.
  • Gluten-Free Orzo: The heart of our pasta bake! I highly recommend using Jovial Brown Rice Orzo or Dellalo Brown Rice / Corn Orzo for the best results. These varieties cook up perfectly tender without becoming sticky. Avoid Jovial Cassava orzo for this recipe, as it tends to yield an overly gummy texture.
  • Chicken Sausage: Pre-cooked chicken sausage adds a fantastic savory depth and a hearty protein boost. Look for flavorful varieties like unexpected cheddar chicken sausages or spinach feta chicken sausages for an extra layer of taste. Simply slice them into ¼-inch rounds. If chicken sausage isn’t your preference, feel free to substitute with sliced mushrooms for a vegetarian option or pre-cooked meatballs for a different protein twist.
  • Cherry Tomatoes: These little gems are essential! As they bake, cherry tomatoes soften and burst, releasing their sweet, slightly acidic juices, which wonderfully infuse the sauce with fresh, vibrant flavor. They add beautiful color and a natural sweetness to the dish.
  • Baby Spinach: A generous handful of baby spinach not only adds a pop of color and freshness but also boosts the nutritional content of the bake. It wilts down easily during cooking, integrating seamlessly into the creamy orzo without overpowering other flavors.
  • Chicken Broth: This forms the liquid base for cooking the orzo. As the orzo absorbs the broth, it swells and becomes tender, soaking up all the rich flavors from the Boursin and seasonings. For the best flavor, I recommend a good quality broth like Kettle & Fire brand.
  • Parmesan Cheese: A sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese over the top before the final rest provides a glorious golden, cheesy crust and a salty, umami finish that perfectly complements the creamy orzo.
  • Salt, Garlic Powder & Italian Seasoning: These pantry staples are crucial for rounding out the flavors. They provide a warm, aromatic base, enhancing the savory notes and ensuring every bite is perfectly seasoned.

Pro Tip for Customization: While chicken sausage is fantastic, don’t hesitate to get creative! Pre-cooked meatballs from brands like Amylu or Trader Joe’s make excellent substitutes. For a delicious Mediterranean orzo bake, simply omit the sausage and perhaps add some Kalamata olives or sun-dried tomatoes.

Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Creamy Boursin Orzo Bake

Preparing this irresistible one-pan dish is surprisingly simple. Follow these straightforward steps to achieve a creamy, flavorful orzo bake every time:

Boursin cheese placed in the center of a white rectangular baking dish before adding other ingredients.

Step 1: Prepare Your Baking Dish. Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Take a 9×13 inch baking dish – a ceramic or glass dish works perfectly here – and place the entire block of Boursin Garlic & Herb cheese directly in the center. This strategic placement allows the cheese to melt evenly and infuse the entire dish as it bakes.

Unbaked orzo, sliced chicken sausage, cherry tomatoes, and spinach arranged around the Boursin cheese in a baking dish, with chicken broth being poured over.

Step 2: Assemble the Ingredients. Around the Boursin cheese, uniformly scatter the dry gluten-free orzo, sliced chicken sausage, whole cherry tomatoes, and roughly chopped baby spinach. Don’t worry about mixing yet; the oven will do most of the work! Evenly sprinkle the salt, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder over all the ingredients. Finally, pour the chicken broth carefully over everything, ensuring the orzo is mostly submerged. The broth is crucial for cooking the pasta and creating that luscious sauce.

Step 3: Bake to Perfection. Once all ingredients are in the dish, cover it tightly with aluminum foil. This traps the steam, allowing the orzo to cook thoroughly and absorb the flavorful broth. Place the covered dish into your preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes. The foil ensures even cooking and prevents the top from drying out or burning.

One pan orzo bake fresh out of the oven, with a spoon stirring the melted Boursin and cooked ingredients to form a creamy sauce.

Step 4: Stir and Check for Doneness. After 35 minutes, carefully remove the foil (watch out for steam!). Using a large spoon or spatula, thoroughly stir all the ingredients together. As you stir, the melted Boursin cheese will combine with the broth and pasta, transforming into a thick, creamy sauce. Check the orzo for tenderness. If it still feels firm or too al dente for your liking, add an additional ½ cup of chicken broth, re-cover with foil, and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the pasta reaches your desired consistency.

Finished baked orzo topped with a generous amount of melted Parmesan cheese, garnished with fresh herbs, ready to be served.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve. Once the orzo is perfectly cooked and the sauce is creamy, sprinkle a generous amount of Parmesan cheese over the top. Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving; this crucial resting period allows the sauce to thicken beautifully to the perfect, luxurious consistency. Serve warm and savor every comforting bite!

Tips & Variations for the Perfect Creamy One-Pan Orzo

Elevate your one-pan Boursin orzo bake with these handy tips and creative add-ins:

  • Mind the Sauce Consistency: Don’t fret if the sauce appears a bit loose when you first pull the dish from the oven. As the orzo bake cools and rests for a few minutes, the pasta will continue to absorb liquid, and the sauce will thicken to a rich, creamy consistency. Give it that essential resting time for optimal results.
  • Boost Your Veggies: This recipe is incredibly forgiving and welcoming to additional vegetables. Consider tossing in some sliced zucchini, diced bell peppers (red, yellow, or orange for extra color), or even asparagus spears during the initial assembly. They will cook alongside the orzo, adding more nutrients and fresh flavors.
  • Extra Cheesy Delight: For an even cheesier experience, stir in ½ cup of shredded mozzarella or a blend of Italian cheeses along with the Boursin before baking. This will create a gooey, stretchy, and extra-indulgent pasta bake that cheese lovers will adore.
  • Seasonal Twists: Adapt this recipe to the seasons! In the warmer months, swap out spinach for fresh, thinly sliced zucchini or baby kale, and finish with a sprinkle of fresh basil or parsley for a lighter, herb-forward summer orzo bake. When autumn or winter rolls around, infuse a heartier flavor by stirring in roasted red peppers (jarred or freshly roasted), sun-dried tomatoes, or even some caramelized onions for a deeper, richer profile.
  • Spice It Up: If you enjoy a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes along with the other seasonings. Start with ¼ teaspoon and adjust to your preferred level of spice.
  • Herbaceous Enhancements: Fresh herbs can make a world of difference. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, chives, or basil before serving for an aromatic boost and vibrant presentation.
  • Broth Alternatives: While chicken broth is recommended, vegetable broth can be used for a vegetarian version or if you simply prefer it. Just ensure it’s a good quality broth for optimal flavor.

Storage & Reheating Tips

This one-pan Boursin orzo bake makes fantastic leftovers, perfect for meal prep or a quick lunch the next day. Here’s how to store and reheat it to maintain its deliciousness:

  • Refrigeration: Any leftover orzo bake should be transferred to an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. As the dish cools and chills, the sauce will naturally thicken further.
  • Reheating for Creaminess: When it’s time to reheat, you might notice the orzo has absorbed most of the sauce and appears a bit drier. To restore its signature creamy texture, stir in a splash of chicken broth or a drizzle of milk (dairy or non-dairy) before warming it up.
  • Microwave Method: For individual portions, microwave for 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway through, until thoroughly heated. Adding a splash of liquid beforehand is key.
  • Oven Method: To reheat a larger portion or the entire dish, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until it’s heated through. Again, a little extra broth or milk helps keep it moist and creamy.
  • Freezing for Longer Storage: For longer preservation, allow the cooled orzo bake to freeze in freezer-safe containers for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating using the microwave or oven method, adding a bit of liquid as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Orzo Bakes

Do you need to cook orzo before baking it in this recipe?

No, and that’s the beauty of this one-pan orzo recipe! The dry orzo cooks directly in the baking dish, absorbing all the delicious chicken broth and rich flavors from the Boursin cheese and chicken sausage as it bakes. This eliminates an extra step and makes cleanup even easier.

How do you ensure baked orzo stays creamy?

The secret to a consistently creamy baked orzo lies in two main components: ample liquid and the magical Boursin cheese. The chicken broth provides the necessary moisture for the orzo to cook, while the Boursin melts down to create a silky, emulsified sauce. Stirring thoroughly after baking and allowing a brief resting period before serving helps the sauce thicken to its perfect, luscious consistency.

Can this Boursin orzo bake be prepared ahead of time?

Absolutely! This recipe is excellent for meal prep. You can assemble all the ingredients in your baking dish, cover it tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. When you’re ready to serve, simply bake as directed, though you might need to add an extra 5-10 minutes to the baking time since the dish starts cold.

Can I make this one-pan orzo bake vegetarian?

Yes, it’s very easy to make this recipe vegetarian! Simply omit the chicken sausage. You can replace it with additional vegetables like sliced mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, or artichoke hearts. For added protein, consider incorporating a can of rinsed and drained chickpeas or white beans, or even some plant-based sausage alternatives.

What kind of orzo works best for this recipe?

For the best creamy texture and consistent results, I highly recommend using brown rice-based gluten-free orzo, such as Jovial Brown Rice Orzo or Dellalo Brown Rice/Corn Orzo. Other small rice-based pasta shapes like stelline can also work. It’s crucial to avoid cassava-based orzo as it tends to become overly sticky and gummy in this specific baking method.

Can I use different vegetables in this orzo bake?

Yes, feel free to customize the vegetables to your liking or whatever you have on hand. Great additions include chopped bell peppers, asparagus, broccoli florets, or even finely diced carrots. Just ensure any harder vegetables are cut into smaller pieces so they cook through in the same amount of time as the orzo.

This oven-baked orzo pasta truly encapsulates everything you cherish about comforting meals – a wonderfully creamy texture, savory flavors, and the incredible ease of a single-dish cleanup, all ready in under an hour! It’s the ideal quick weeknight dinner that feels like a luxurious treat from your favorite restaurant, with the added benefit of being naturally gluten-free and made with wholesome, simple ingredients. Bring gourmet comfort to your table tonight!

Creamy One Pan Boursin Orzo Bake (with Chicken Sausage)

By: Mary Smith
Prep: 5
Cook: 30
Total: 35
Yield: 8 cups
This one pan Boursin orzo bake is creamy, cozy, and full of flavor, all made in a single dish for the easiest gluten-free weeknight dinner. With chicken sausage, spinach, cherry tomatoes, and Boursin cheese, it’s a quick, family-friendly meal that feels restaurant-worthy but comes together with minimal effort!

Equipment

  • 9×13 inch casserole dish

Ingredients

  • 5.3 oz Boursin Garlic & Herb cheese
  • 12 oz gluten free orzo, Do NOT use the Jovial Cassava Orzo for this! It will turn out sticky and gummy. I only recommend making this with Jovial Brown Rice Orzo, DeLallo GF orzo, or Jovial Stelline, or other small pasta of choice made from rice.
  • 12 oz chicken sausage, Unexpected cheddar chicken sausages or Applegate spinach feta are my favorite to use in this recipe. Cut into ¼ inch rounds
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes
  • 2 cups baby spinach, roughly chopped
  • 3 cups chicken broth, I like Kettle & Fire brand
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Parmesan, for garnish, if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Add the Boursin cheese to the middle of a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Sprinkle the orzo, sliced chicken sausage, cherry tomatoes, and chopped spinach around the Boursin.
  3. Sprinkle the salt, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder over everything. Pour the broth over top and cover tightly with foil.
  4. Bake for 35 minutes, then uncover and stir all of the ingredients together until a creamy sauce forms and the pasta is cooked through. If the orzo is still too hard, add ½ cup more broth and cook for 5-10 more minutes. Top with Parmesan cheese and enjoy!

Notes

  • Jovial brown rice orzo is my favorite. Delallo Brown Rice / Corn Orzo also works. I do not recommend using Jovial Cassava orzo for this recipe – it turns out way too sticky!
  • The sauce will thicken upon standing.
  • Other possible add-ins: sliced mushrooms, Amylu, or Trader Joe’s pre-cooked refrigerated meatballs instead of sausage.
  • If you’re meal-prepping, this easy orzo casserole reheats beautifully the next day! Just add a splash of broth before warming it up.
