What Ingredients Do I Need to Make These Asian Pork Meatball Bowls?
One of the best parts about this recipe is how it utilizes common pantry items, making it easy to whip up anytime. Here’s a breakdown of the key ingredients and why they’re essential:
For the Umami-Packed Pork Meatballs:
- Ground Pork: The star of the show! Ground pork provides a wonderfully tender texture and rich flavor that pairs perfectly with the Asian spices. Feel free to use high-quality pork like that from Butcher Box for an even better experience.
- Almond Flour: This acts as a gluten-free binder, helping the meatballs hold their shape while keeping them moist and tender. It’s a great alternative to traditional breadcrumbs for Paleo and Whole30 compliance. You can often find large bags at Costco or Thrive Market.
- Egg: Another crucial binder, the egg helps keep the meatballs together during cooking and contributes to their tender consistency.
- Coconut Aminos: This is a fantastic gluten-free, soy-free, and Whole30-friendly substitute for soy sauce. It offers a slightly sweeter, milder umami flavor.
- Ground Ginger & Garlic Powder: These aromatic spices are essential for infusing the meatballs with classic Asian flavors.
- Sea Salt: Enhances all the other flavors.
- Crushed Red Pepper: Adds a hint of heat, which you can adjust to your preference.
For the Healthy Cauliflower “Fried Rice”:
Our “fried rice” uses cauliflower as a low-carb, nutrient-dense base, making it incredibly versatile and light.
- Sesame Oil: Toasted sesame oil is key here, providing that distinctive nutty, smoky aroma and flavor that’s characteristic of fried rice. If you only have regular sesame oil, that will work too, but the toasted variety offers a deeper flavor.
- Onion & Garlic: The foundational aromatics that build the flavor base for our “fried rice.”
- Frozen Cauliflower Rice: A true time-saver! Frozen cauliflower rice cooks quickly and easily. Make sure to break up any large chunks before cooking for a uniform texture.
- Coleslaw Mix: This ready-to-use mix (typically green cabbage, purple cabbage, and carrots) adds fantastic crunch, color, and a medley of vegetables without extra chopping.
- Coconut Aminos & Sea Salt: For seasoning the “fried rice” to perfection.
For the Irresistible Sticky Glaze:
This sauce is the magic that ties the entire dish together, creating a beautiful sheen and a burst of sweet and savory notes.
- Coconut Aminos: Again, the base for our gluten-free, soy-free sauce, providing rich umami.
- Rice Vinegar: Adds a crucial tangy counterpoint to the sweetness, balancing the flavors beautifully.
- Toasted Sesame Oil: Reinforces the nutty aroma and depth of flavor in the sauce.
- Red Boat Fish Sauce: A secret weapon for authentic Asian flavor! Fish sauce adds an incredible depth of umami. While you can substitute with a pinch more salt if absolutely necessary, I highly recommend finding it as it truly elevates the dish. Most grocery stores carry it.
- Ground Ginger: Adds a warm, spicy note to the glaze.
- Honey: Provides natural sweetness and helps create that desirable sticky texture. For a strict Whole30 compliant meal, simply omit the honey.
- Arrowroot Powder & Water (Slurry): This is your Paleo and Whole30 approved thickener! It works similarly to cornstarch, creating a glossy, thick sauce that clings perfectly to the meatballs.
Stocking up on these essential Asian pantry items will make it incredibly easy to whip up not just this recipe, but many other quick and delicious Asian-inspired meals any night of the week!

Asian Pork Meatball Bowls (Whole30, Paleo)
Ingredients
Asian Pork Meatballs
- 1 lb ground pork (I like Butcher Box)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup almond flour
- 1 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp sea salt
- ½ tsp crushed red pepper
Fried “Rice”
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- ½ onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (12 oz) bag frozen cauliflower rice (pound on it so there are no large chunks!)
- 1 bag coleslaw mix (green cabbage, purple cabbage, carrots)
- ¼ cup coconut aminos
- ½ tsp sea salt, more or less to taste
Sticky Sauce
- ¾ cup coconut aminos
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tsp toasted sesame oil
- ½ tsp Red Boat Fish Sauce
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp honey (omit for Whole30)
- 2 tsp arrowroot powder
- 2 tbsp water
Garnish
- Diced green onion
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients and mix well using your hands. Form the mixture into approximately 2-inch meatballs. You should get about 12 meatballs per pound of pork. Place the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
- While the meatballs are baking, prepare your “fried rice.” Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sesame oil, then sauté the diced onion and minced garlic for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Add the frozen cauliflower rice, coleslaw mix, coconut aminos, and sea salt. Stir everything to combine, then cover and let it cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes until the cauliflower is tender-crisp.
- While the “fried rice” is cooking, prepare the sticky sauce. In a small saucepan, combine all sticky sauce ingredients except for the arrowroot powder and water slurry. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the arrowroot powder and 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Once the sauce is boiling, whisk in the arrowroot slurry mixture. Continue whisking for approximately 1 minute until the sauce thickens to a glossy consistency. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Once the meatballs are cooked, remove them from the oven. Serve the meatballs immediately over the cauliflower “fried rice,” drizzling generously with the prepared sticky sauce. Garnish with diced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired, for an extra pop of flavor and visual appeal. Enjoy your wholesome homemade takeout!
Notes
You can also make these meatballs using ground chicken or ground turkey for a leaner protein option. Adjust cooking times slightly if using different meats.

Pro Tips for Perfect Asian Pork Meatball Bowls
To ensure your Asian Pork Meatball Bowls turn out perfectly every time, keep these expert tips in mind:
- Don’t Overmix: When combining the meatball ingredients, mix just until everything is incorporated. Overmixing can lead to tough meatballs.
- Even Sizing: Try to make your meatballs as uniform in size as possible. This ensures they cook evenly. A small cookie scoop can be very helpful for this!
- Pound the Cauliflower Rice: If your frozen cauliflower rice has large clumps, give the bag a few good thumps on the counter to break them up before adding to the skillet. This helps it cook faster and more evenly.
- Taste and Adjust: Always taste your sauces and “fried rice” before serving and adjust seasonings as needed. You might want a little more salt, a touch more coconut aminos, or an extra pinch of red pepper for heat.
- Fresh Garnishes: Don’t skip the garnishes! Diced green onions and sesame seeds add a fresh burst of flavor and a beautiful finish to the dish.
- Quality Ingredients: Using good quality ingredients, especially for your ground pork and fish sauce, will make a noticeable difference in the final flavor.
Serving Suggestions & Customizations
These Asian Pork Meatball Bowls are incredibly versatile and can be customized to suit your preferences:
- Protein Swap: As mentioned, ground chicken or ground turkey are excellent lean alternatives to pork. Ground beef can also work for a different flavor profile.
- Add More Veggies: Feel free to toss in extra chopped vegetables to your “fried rice,” such as bell peppers, snap peas, shredded carrots, or mushrooms.
- Different Bases: While cauliflower rice is perfect for Whole30/Paleo, these meatballs are also fantastic served over regular steamed white or brown rice, rice noodles, or even spiralized zucchini noodles for another low-carb option.
- Spice it Up: If you love heat, increase the crushed red pepper in both the meatballs and the sauce, or add a drizzle of sriracha (not Whole30) or chili garlic sauce to your finished bowl.
- Fresh Herbs: A sprinkle of fresh cilantro or mint can add a lovely fragrant touch.
Storing Leftovers & Meal Prep
This recipe is excellent for meal prepping! You can easily make a larger batch and enjoy it throughout the week.
- Storage: Store cooked meatballs, “fried rice,” and sticky sauce in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Reheating: Reheat the meatballs gently in a skillet or microwave until warmed through. The “fried rice” can also be reheated in a skillet or microwave. Reheat the sauce separately and drizzle over just before serving to maintain its consistency.
- Freezing: The cooked meatballs (without the sauce) freeze well for up to 2-3 months. Thaw them in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat and toss with freshly made sauce.
With its vibrant flavors, quick preparation, and healthy profile, these Asian Pork Meatball Bowls are sure to become a cherished recipe in your kitchen. Enjoy the taste of homemade takeout!
